Estorica is a roleplaying company dedicated to providing a forum roleplay experience to our users. The company is two years old, while the most recent version of our site will be opening soon. We are providing a jcink premium platform, set in an original world influenced by different parts of the world before the 1900s. The world and its setting are backed up by a dedicated lore team. We love to answer questions about our creation, the little and large intricacies, and the limitations invented to keep things fair and balanced. We do not require character sheets to get started, as that can inhibit the creative process. We do encourage long-lasting roleplay, with connections to other plots across the entire forum. Our goal is to create something with a group of people that everyone enjoys reading and adding onto as time passes. If all of this sounds interesting, feel free to drop in at http://estorica.org and check out our living world.

The Birthless are the oldest known beings in the entire universe. They came into existence at the same time the world had to exist in several different planets, planes, and dimensions. They are the creators of the Gods, and while not all-powerful themselves together, they can make individuals of their choice infinitely powerful.
Birthless can take any shape and can have an affinity for the different mana types. The affinity they have is determined by the place of power they last emerged from. Birthless will always more than one affinity, but some have been known to emerge from ley lines that have all 19 mana types at once. The initially appeared as balls of light, but as they learned of Mortals, they mimicked the different shapes that mortals took.
The core values of a Birthless are very loose as they are less emotionally driven than Mortals and Vagary. Often times, they go with a direct approach to solve a problem in a way that won't branch out too far, but that is only when it comes to personal issues. When they share a problem with other beings, this complicates things, and in most cases, they will simply do what the other beings want and then worry about their own desires after the other person's wishes are taken care of. This is not because they are selfless but because Birthless do not age, and mostly live forever so long as they are not killed or cut off from their place of power.
This nature has led them to follow Mortals more often than not, sometimes in secret, and sometimes for the entirety of a Mortals life, without the mortal having even known they were being watched. Mortals who have discovered the Birthless watching them have described these Birthless as obsessive and possessive of the beings they choose to observe. In some cases playing pranks, or practical jokes just to get a reaction. This is not to be vindictive, or intentionally cruel, but in some cases, they lack the ability to understand emotional responses to cruelty or pain.
Birthless ability to learn ranges from whit less to hyper-intelligent, in most cases the less intelligent Birthless are more like wild animals. In other instances the Birthless can literally rewrite their own minds to be capable of solving very complex problems. The level of intelligence is also dependant on what the birthless currently desire, rewriting its intelligence to get the best results out of the perceived objective.
Mortals have perceived Birthless in many ways, in the earlier times referring to them as wisps, spirits, ghosts, apparitions. In the more modern and educated setting, they are well researched and well known, but because they can come from different planets, and different dimensions, the depth of research into Birthless is infinite.
Vagary are keystones that have come to life, and now seek to replenish the mana they have lost. They start off with very little intelligence, and as they gather mana their intelligence and capabilities increase. If a lesser Vagary manages to eat enough mana, then they will evolve in stages. First, they become a mid-tier Vagary, then a greater Vagary. If a Vagary gains its maximum possible amount of mana, they have three options. They will either transform into an aberration, a newly formed keystone, or they become a near-divine being known as a Manaborn.
The Manaborn and aberration are extremely dangerous and usually kill anything on sight if it isn't familiar with it. If they can get past this stage in their life, and become recognized as pillars of Kurose's kingdom, they are allowed into his ilk and are deemed mana lords.
The Vagary are a unique abomination as they do not share their origin with any species. They are unable to reproduce on their own and instead infect existing communities to grow their brood.
They are intelligent but typically take their commands from the strongest Vagary present when in a group. Their obedience will cause them to willfully end their own existence for the strongest of their kind to survive. The first Vagary originally came from clusters of mana in the Abyss, created by a tainting of mana, which gave life to a being that should never have existed . They emerged from keystones and then converted other forms of life into what they were so that they could better protect themselves.
Many Vagaries are found within the Abyss. Over the years that they have spent under the leadership of Kurose and his ilk, they have found themselves slowly expanding into more civilized cultures in secret. Due to their adamant ability to shapeshift some of them act as spies, beggars, and impersonators to gain footholds in foreign societies.
The Vagary are naturally powerful magic users, second only to the Gods, with Hybrid Sorcerers follow after them in raw magical strength. Their strength has the cost of needing to continually consume. Their mouths span from just above their slitted nostrils and travel all the way down their abdomen. They can devour whomever or whatever they want as quickly or as slowly as they desire. They have tongues that they drag across the ground for tracking ley lines and large portions of mana. The tongue contains vital organs that when damaged, are easily replaced. If removed while low on mana could paralyze the Vagary until enough ambient mana was gathered to regenerate said organs.
In some cases, Vagary will permanently alter their bodies to take more unique and specialized forms. Some people wonder if there are Vagary living in their own villages.
In some Vagary friendships pacts are made. Finbel Parrolette discovered the identity of the creatures known as Vagary and proved that they were intelligent. She would later develop the taboo art of forming a pact with a Vagary which would exchange one's sanity and nature for mana and strength.
In an extremely rare case, a Vagary could make a pact with a God, this process is uncharted territory for all beings except one. Kurose, the God Eater, is the only person to have achieved this through the process of eating the god known as Dauoin. A God Eater is a Vagary Hybrid who has eaten a God, and in doing so has become a place of power. This person can control Vagary, and turn mortals, hybrids, and birthless into Vagary via a corruptive aura, and will continue to have an insatiable hunger for divine flesh.
Vagary will live indefinitely unless their heads and tongue are removed from their bodies. This is not an easy task, and even more complicated the older the Vagary is.

Elise had been chosen by the Birthless due to qualities that they had observed her portraying, and she followed that nature in vowing to help them in any way she could. The Birthless performed a pact with her, granting her the simple duty of maintaining the balance between Mortals, Gods, and Birthless. It was on this day that Dauoin feared he would not be able to protect mortals from new Gods, and Elise was forever called: the God of Balance.
“I did not come here to fight your wars for you… I came to put a stop to them, and if that means one thousand more years of decay and suffering on the planet... to stop your tyranny ... then so be it...”
The Goddess of Mana & Balance was tasked with policing the native users of mana and enforcing fairness among all creatures so that those without access to mana would not be enslaved by those who have it.
If you were to ask a monk of Elise who she is, they would tell you that she is the savior, and the martyr, of all things. They will also tell you that she now exists outside of reach in a moment between truth and lie where she is both pariah and insider of the way of the world. This is how we all should be so that one day, when we die, we may be lucky enough to live with Elise in this space of chaos and order in all its glory and perfect harmony.
After creating the worst calamity, the world had ever known she spent thousands of years trying to right the wrong. Without mana, but also being unable to die of old age, she was punished for her crimes by gods and mortals alike up until she gained her divinity back. Which she became the only other fully powered god outside of her grandson. She took on the role of the Goddess of Paths and now directs the flow of mana, ensuring that a place like The Abyss could not spread further than it already has.
She now lives on another plane of existence impossible to reach by mortals, birthless, and vagary. This was done so that no one would ever be able to disrupt balance ever again.

Dauoin had been chosen by the Birthless due to qualities that they had observed him portraying, and he followed that nature in vowing to help them in any way he could. The Birthless performed a pact with him, granting him the simple duty of protecting all Mortals and Birthless from danger. It was on this day that the Birthless realized that a mortal could become a God and Dauoin was forever called: the God of Protection.
“Through my flesh, you will learn… and you will grow… take it and with it my mission to protect all mortals of Cavus with you.”
Dauoin is a god that has a lot of conjecture around his being. If you ask the followers of Elise, and her son Fain, they will tell you that Dauoin is a broken god, a deceiver, an evil god bent on removing free will from all things. It is for these reasons that he had to be destroyed, and why there are no other gods outside of Elise and her son Fain in the modern-day.
If you ask, a cultist of the Vagary, or a Follower of Kurose the God eater, they will tell you that Dauoin is the beginning of the end, and he paved the way for true safety and salvation through evolution, and reinvention.
If you ask, a Priest of Carra, or Bask, or Aspel, they will tell you that Dauoin is a fallen savior, that embodies humanity. A God that lost his way due to this humanity, embodying what it means to make great sacrifices with no guarantee of success. He is the soul of all mortal existence as, without him, there wouldn’t be any.
From the cries of mortals who suffered a terrible fate, after terrible fate with no gods protection, a hero arose. The God of Protection, tasked with protecting Mortals from anything that might threaten them. He started as a simple man who wanted to do good. In the beginning, he was successful in his dream. As the mortals grew in number, he grew overwhelmed and succumbed to doing whatever it took for the greater good of mortals. With such a goal, he became a broken god and the first to be devoured by the God Eater Kurose after being permanently crippled in the Abyss by his sister Elise. His spirit refuses to leave, the Abyss, and all things within the Abyss take the form of his Vagary, mana born from the place of power within his own heart.

The last of her kind to be elevated to godhood, Carra was tasked with regulating the flow of mana on Cavus. She couldn't stop mana, and she couldn't increase the amount of mana currently on the planet, but she could regulate its flow on a planetary scale. Carra became known as the goddess of paths because she would only appear to observe choices made by mortals that would shape the flow of mana in any given location. Where great internal conflict was present, she would appear, not to influence, but to observe. When the choice was made, regardless of the outcome, a Boone would be granted.
When Aspel instructed Carra to avoid mortals and to no longer interact with them, she deliberately disobeyed. She witnessed many paths, many choices, that spread the flow of both life and death mana that needed to be regulated. She regulated the mana back into a cycle that maintained balance on the planet. To ignore the mortals would be to forsake her purpose, her nature. She became a holy symbol of fertility, war, and growth in the eyes of mortals and was worshipped by them more than any other god before the age of the new gods.
When the break happened, Carra would be confirmed dead by her priest and her followers. Rather than die on Cavus, alone and uncertain, she dispersed herself into her most trusted followers. Tasking their bloodlines with a holy mission of restoration and preservation of mana on the planet of Cavus.

Bask was created by the birthless, like his brother and sister. He was tasked with shepherding mana when it became lost from the collective. The end of their journey often left a melancholy feeling for the god as though the mana wanted to be and do more. It was he who had discovered the mana had gained sentience and befriended this new life first, allowing the mana to travel, gave birth to mortals. Bask allowed them to travel so long as they never forgot that they would always come back to him in the end.
When the mortals began to strike one another down, Bask would come for them then, he would go over their lives with them and ask them if they had any regrets. He came across many scenarios... some fulfilled, some not so much, but each one was slightly different than the others. With him being forbidden to interact with mortals, his only friends were those whose journeys had already ended. So he continued those journey's occasionally befriending those who caught his attention and granting them additional chances at life, as they could no longer be considered mortals... the undead's journey was that of something new.
Like Aspel, Bask keeps a book. He appears to mortals at the moment of death—to collect their dying breath. He listens to their final gasps, a lifetime of memories and sins. He pens these into The Book of Whispers and holds it safe so that when their families come to unite with their fallen and pray to him for answers, he can deliver those final words to help put others at rest. All mortals are judged at death, but not by the gods and instead by those they left behind.

Maleia sea is home to a nation of nomadic pirates who generally live by their creed. Across the sea are the Maleia islands which hold various small cultures, each one unique in its way. Collectively the islands are ruled by the President of the United islands, elected by the council of pirates and island representatives. Many of the more elaborate and majestic islands are built on the backs of dragon turtles that have symbiotic relationships with the people of Maleia, which allows the people to move as need be.
Neria is a Confederation of several independent clans and families, with loose rules and enforcement between the clans under normal circumstances, with the muscles of the government being flexed to maintain a small level of uniformity and to defend against foreign and domestic threats.
Seiran, the largest country on Cavus, is bordered by the Abyss to the northwest and Neria to the north. Seiran is divided into two regions. Central Seiran is made up of a mountainous desert, while Coastal Seiran is blessed with fertile land and forests. Once two countries with a reasonably bloody history, Seiran has only become a semi-united front relatively recently. They are vastly different culture wise and prefer to stay very hands-off with one another, and they are one country in name only.
It is a country in which the current regime is a monarchy and is ruled by a Queen, who is the head of the government. Next to the Queen is the power exercised by the government made up of 7 princesses. Tragen is the most rugged body of land found within Cavus outside of the Abyss. Tragen contains the top highest reaching mountains on the planet. Much of Tragen is vertical; mountains, cliffs, and deep valleys. All of the settlements are either found on the shores of rivers and large bodies of water within these valleys. This does not include the 5 cities that reside in other territories.
The abyss is a colossal pit that was created sometime during the age of myth, and it is speculated that the land in which the abyss rest used to be where the gods resided. The vertical hole has a diameter of around 3.6 square miles however the actual depth of the abyss is unknown as it has never been reached, it is known that the surface area of the abyss is at the minimum 9.6 million square miles extended. There are separate oceans, landscapes, continents, and worlds; the further one goes down. At its center rest the Garden of Evil, home to various plant life that is imbued with the power of Dauoin, those who get to close will be overcome with corruption and a need to be wicked.

Created by the birthless, and the first of his kind, Aspel gave names to many of the concepts, feelings, and practices of mortals and birthless alike. For a time, while still new at his job he had minimal issues sharing knowledge with all who sought it, and it is because of this that a variety of creatures on Cavus have a level of intelligence higher than those of earth. It wasn't until after mortals started to use their knowledge to destroy one another that Aspel began to withhold things, later vowing to limit his interactions with mortals to a minimum.
He forced his siblings Bask and Carra to follow that same vow, which became all the more difficult when the mortals would seek them out. To facilitate this constant pursuit of the gods and their abilities, Aspel created a form of communication called prayer, a one-way form of communication between mortals and gods. In doing this, the gods could gain more information and layout paths for those who sought their help without giving away too much information right away.
Aspel created a magical book, in this book, all events past, present, and future are recorded. Aspel himself can't read all of the pages, as doing so will alter them, thus altering his future and the others around him. Mortals, on the other hand, have the ability to read the future so long as their actions were predetermined to learn their future from the book. They can do this only once, and any mortal who has ever tried has gone blind after witnessing the prophecy they were born to tell.
This one is simple, see if you can figure it out for an idea on the next lore piece.
